Preparation of Career Proposals to the National Science Foundation (5/13)

Update: Note new date and location.

“Preparation of Career Proposals to the National Science Foundation” will be held Friday, May 13, noon-3 p.m. in the Meyerhoff Chemistry Building, Room 272.

This workshop builds on the material covered in workshop #020 and includes methods for tailoring proposals to meet the specific requirements of the National Science Foundation’s (NSF) Faculty Early Career Development (CAREER) award program.

NSF CAREER proposals are not simply research proposals written by junior faculty, but are instead “awards in support of junior faculty who exemplify the role of teacher-scholars through outstanding research, excellent education and the integration of education and research within the context of the mission of their organizations.”

These awards are meant to support junior faculty members in the integration of research and education. The unique requirements of writing these proposals are emphasized in this workshop, along with strategies to write a compelling proposal.

The workshop will be presented by Ralph M. Pollack, associate vice president for research.

A light lunch will be served. Register soon as space is limited.

RSVP by Tuesday, May 10, to dianem@umbc.edu

Mental Health First Aid Training (6/13-14)

The next “Mental Health First Aid” class will take place June 13-14. To register, email your name, department/major, e-mail address and cell phone number to studentaffairs@umbc.edu.

Participants must commit to attending both days of training.

Mental Health First Aid is the help provided to a person developing a mental health problem or in a mental health crisis. The first aid is given until appropriate professional treatment is received or until the crisis is resolved.

The goals of Mental Health First Aid are to:

  1. Preserve life where the person may be in danger to self or others;
  2. Provide help to prevent the mental health problem from developing into a serious state;
  3. Promote recovery of good mental health; and
  4. Provide comfort to a person with a mental health problem.

Mental Health First Aid does NOT teach people to be therapists. Rather, it teaches how to recognize the symptoms of mental health problems, provide initial help and guide a person towards appropriate professional help.

Patricia Wick, training director for Counseling Services, and Cindy Paige-Desi, community development coordinator for Residential Life, will conduct the training on June 13-14, 8:30 a.m.-4 p.m. Individuals who sign up for this two-day class must commit to complete it in its entirety. There is no charge for the training.

Participants who complete the training will receive a certificate.

This training is sponsored by the Division of Student Affairs.

The Magic of Conflict (6/2)

The ability to respectfully deal with conflict with a sense of personal power and well-being is critical to our success, and to the success of our teams and the university.

This workshop helps participants see conflict as an opportunity and provides skills to resolve it creatively. Attendees experience how changes in self-management have a magical effect on stress level and relationships! The approach draws from principles of the non-violent martial art of Aikido, and is based on the book “The Magic of Conflict” by Thomas F. Crum. This experiential workshop facilitated by Terri Werner utilizes an interesting variety of training techniques to enhance respect for self and for others.

Participants in this workshop learn to be calm and act effectively under pressure, deal with change and complexity with power rather than paralysis, minimize stress and increase vitality in the workplace, acquire skills to resolve conflict effectively and save time, money and frustration.

This workshop is conducted in four half-day sessions, over a period of three weeks. Participants will receive two books and a course workbook. There are reading and practice assignments between sessions. We request a commitment to attend all four sessions, June 2, 9, 16 and 23, 9 a.m.-12:30 p.m. The June 23 session begins at 8:30 a.m.

Class size is limited to 20 to maximize the participatory nature of the program, so register by May 9 by contacting Jill Weinknecht Wardell at ext. 5-1442 or jwardell@umbc.edu.

Managing Across: Having Accountability Conversations with Colleagues and Customers (5/12)

When you are not holding co-workers and customers accountable, it costs you in terms of lost productivity, low morale and unresolved conflict. When you do bring up challenging issues and resolve them thoroughly without getting angry or anxious, your stress decreases and productivity accelerates.

In this interactive workshop, Suzanne Kryder helps you develop a confident communication style for setting healthy boundaries and being known as a team player. You will learn how to work effectively with people with differing communication styles; identify negative judgments of colleagues that reduce your ability to completely resolve work issues; use a four-step formula for delivering and receiving behavioral feedback and making requests; disagree without being defensive, angry or afraid; and facilitate a conversation to help two colleagues resolve a disagreement or conflict.

The workshop will be Thursday, May 12, 8:30 a.m.-4:30 p.m., in the University Center, Room 312.

Register by Wednesday, May 4, at: http://www.umbc.edu/training/community
