A Message From The Heart (2/10)

UMBC’s Valentine to faculty and staff is a workshop on heart health.

Heart disease is one of the most common causes of death in American adults. Many of the factors contributing to heart disease are preventable, and you can learn how to reduce your risk of heart disease. In this session you will learn about the risk factors associated with heart disease, which factors are preventable and what you can do to make sure that your heart stays healthy.

The workshop will be Wednesday, February 10, 2-3:30 p.m., in the University Center, Room 312.

Health Coverage Resources During Challenging Economic Times (10/22)

Presented by HealthMarkets, this session will provide faculty and staff with information and resources related to continuing health care coverage during these challenging economic times. Topics include COBRA coverage, health coverage for family members with pre-existing conditions, health care options available after COBRA expires and other healthcare “hot topics.”

The workshop will be Thursday, October 22, noon-1 p.m., in the University Center, Room 310.

New Information on Managing High Blood Pressure

The tips and articles section on the Wellness in the Workplace Web site has been updated with several resources for managing high blood pressure. The links will provide you with  important information along with a blood pressure quiz and a blood pressure risk calculator.

Flu Shot Clinics (10/6-7)

Maxim Health Systems will be sponsoring two days of seasonal flu shot clinics (not H1N1) on campus on Tuesday, October 6, and Wednesday, October 7, 11 a.m.-3 p.m., at The Commons Main Street. The cost is $25, cash or check only (made out to Maxim Health Systems).  Anyone with Aetna insurance can receive a free shot if they can show proof of coverage with their Aetna insurance card.

These flu shot clinics are open to all faculty, staff and students. For more information, contact University Health Services at ext. 5-2542.  At this time, University Health Services does not have flu shots available.

An Introduction to The Alexander Technique (11/12)

Learn an innovative method that you can practice anywhere and that can relieve stress, provide relief from chronic neck and back pain, allow for improved coordination, flexibility and balance, and give you stronger postural and breath support.   The Alexander Technique is an educational practice that restores your natural poise, coordination, and ease of movement.  As a student of the technique you become a refined observer of the habits that prevent you from moving comfortably, and you learn a specific process by which you can consciously change those habits so that moving becomes pleasurable.

The workshop will be Thursday, November 12, 9:00 – 11:30 a.m., in the University Center, Room 310.
