Management Advisory Services Internal Control Education Session (12/8)

Recognizing the benefits of internal controls and understanding internal controls is the responsibility of the campus community. A two-hour session will cover this information on Tuesday, December 8, 10 a.m., in The Commons, Room 331, is appropriate for faculty and staff. New employees are required to attend this session, and we encourage attendance by existing employees who would benefit from reviewing internal controls. As part of the session, representatives from Inventory Control will present information on inventory policies and procedures.

Predicting Factors that Impact Crop Productivity within and Outside Centers of Crop Origin (12/2)

Great American Smokeout (11/19)

Join University Health Services and campus efforts to address smoking for the Great American Smokeout. This event will take place Thursday, November 19, 11 a.m.-2p.m., at The Commons Main Street. Stop by to pick up information about the effects of tobacco use, as well learn about cessation services available to smokers who are looking to quit. Quit Kits will be available to all students, faculty and staff smokers as a first step for those who are trying to quit. Quit Kits include a quit smoking contract, gum, mints and other items to take your mind off of smoking as well as information about the Maryland Quit Line. Gender and Ethnicity in Shakespeare for Young People from the 18th Century to Today (11/16)

Join Amy Scott-Douglas, professor of English at the University of Maryland, College Park and Georgetown University, for a discussion on Shakespeare. The event will be Monday, November 16, noon-1 p.m., in the University Center, Room 310. Scott-Douglas is the author of, “Shakespeare Inside: The Bard Behind Bars,” along with several other novels and essays.

National Recycling Day (11/17)

In celebration of National Recycling Day, Facilities Management and The Commons Recycling Committee is sponsoring an E-Cycling Day on Tuesday, November 17, 11 a.m.–3 p.m. The UMBC community is invited to bring computers, laptops, printers, copiers, TVs and anything else that plugs in or runs on batteries to the Main Street in The Commons. There will be curbside drop-off available at the south entrance of The Commons at the same time. Committee volunteers will collect your recycling as you drive through The Commons Drive Circle. Students, faculty, staff and departments are encouraged to participate. A representative from Inventory Control will be on hand to answer questions and assist with property disposition. This is a free event.

The recycling committee is on the quest to be number one in recycling. Therefore, the committee is planning future opportunities to educate and inform the community of how the University is committed to recycling and being “green.”

Tracing Sources of Organic Matter in Two Urban Bayous (11/13)

Join Shuiwang Duan from the Chesapeake Biological Laboratory for a discussion on organic matter in urban bayous on Friday, November 13, 2 p.m., at the Technology Research Center, Room 206. This lecture is part of the Fall 2009 Seminar Series sponsored by the Center for Urban Environmental Research and Education.

Facilities Master Plan – Campus Forum (11/18)

The Facilities Master Plan Update Steering Committee invites you to join us on Wednesday, November 18, noon, in the Information Technology and Engineering building, Lecture Hall 7, for a campus forum to discuss the UMBC Facilities Master Plan. The master plan update is a year-long process to create refinements to the previous master plan, based on projections of space and facility needs for the next ten years. The plan creates a framework for future development as well as a guide for open space and land use planning on campus.

Shriver Center Lunch and Learn Panel on State Government (11/9)

This panel will provide faculty, staff and students with an opportunity to meet and network with a diverse group of industry professionals representing various agencies within Maryland State Government.

Panel members include Takeia M. Bradley, CPIP/GEAR UP coordinator, Maryland Higher Education Commission; Kieran Dowdy, analyst, Governor’s StateStat Office; Martin Ford, associate director, Maryland Office for Refugees and Asylees; Kim Lamphier, Office of Communications, Maryland Department of the Environment; Renee Spence, executive director of governmental relations, Maryland State Department of Education; Ashley Valis, special assistant of intergovernmental affairs, Office of the Governor.
