UMBC Talks: The Study Abroad Experience (4/7)

The Office of Student Life Mosaic Center’s “UMBC Talks: A Diversity Dialogue Series” continues this semester every Wednesday noon-1 p.m., at the Mosaic Center in The Commons, Room 2B23. Join this facilitated discussion to learn more about this topic, voice your opinions and hear those of your fellow community members. This week’s discussion, The Study Abroad Experience: Perspectives from Students and Faculty, will be on April 7.

These discussions are facilitated by faculty, staff and student leaders. For groups or classes of 10 people or more, RSVP.

Open Enrollment Health Fair (3/30)

The Department of Human Resources (HR) will be sponsoring a Spring Open Enrollment Health Fair Tuesday, March 30, 11 a.m.-2 p.m., in the University Center Ballroom. This year’s open enrollment period is scheduled April 14-28. Vendors from all the state benefit plans will be onsite to provide information regarding updates and changes to the various benefit plans. In addition, HR has partnered with many on- and off-campus experts to provide key information on health and wellness offerings.

There will be refreshments and free giveaways! We encourage you to attend the fair.

Road Salt and Soils: Cation Impacts on Metal Mobility and Bioavailability (3/26)

Spatio-temporal Heterogeneity in West Nile Virus Host Impacts and Vector Abundances (3/31)

Join Shannon Ladeau, community ecologist and staff scientist from the Carey Institute for Ecosystem Studies, for a discussion on the West Nile virus. This lecture is part of the Geography and Environmental Systems Seminar series and will be Wednesday, March 31, noon, in Sondheim Hall, Room 001.

Francophone Voices of the New Morocco (3/30)

Join Valerie Orlando of the University of Maryland, College Park as she discusses recent novels, poetry, cinema and journalism, exploring the transformations that Moroccan society is experiencing, particularly in the area of gender and sexuality. This lecture is part of this year’s Espaces series sponsored by the French area of the Department of Modern Languages, Linguistics and Intercultural Communication.  For more information contact tfield@umbc.edu.

Shriver Center Book Drive (3/23-27)

The Shriver Living Learning Center (SLLC) is a Living Learning Community that collaborates on service projects throughout the year. The second annual SLLC reunion will take place on Saturday, March 27, and is partially sponsored by Russel Toyota.  Russel Toyota of Catonsville in partnership with The Shriver Center and The Office of Undergraduate Education is sponsoring a book drive to benefit “The Book Thing,” an organization based in Baltimore City that seeks to put unwanted books into the hands of those who want them.  Drop off your books on your way to class or to a meeting! Projecting Future Growth in Maryland and its Consequences on Nutrient Loadings to Maryland Streams and to the Chesapeake Bay (3/12)

Join the Center for Urban Environmental Research and Education for its Spring 2010 Seminar Series with a discussion by Glenn Mogen from Virginia Tech University’s Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering. The lecture will be on future growth in Maryland and its consequences to the streams and Chesapeake Bay, held Friday, March 12, 2 p.m., in the Technology Research Center, Room 206.
