Maryland Charity Campaign Secures 1,085 Gifts

In a year when needs in the community beyond the campus are greater than ever, the UMBC campus community went above and beyond last year’s record of 930 gifts for the Maryland Charity Campaign (MCC). As of noon on Wednesday, December 16, the stretch goal of 1000 gifts has been exceeded and gifts total 1,085. There were $172,000 dollars raised – an increase of $14,000 above last year – and more are coming in. An outstanding 56% of our community made a gift.

A special announcement was made by Lisa Akchin, associate vice president of marketing and public relations and MCC Chair, at the Holiday Party on Wednesday, December 16.

“There would not be a UMBC 1000 without the efforts of a group I call the UMBC 85 – the dozens of department-based Maryland Charity Campaign coordinators who go above and beyond to make a difference,” said Akchin.“Many volunteer for this role year after year, and the campaign benefits greatly from their commitment and experience.”

“The Maryland Charity Campaign reflects who we are as a campus,” said President Freeman Hrabowski. “When it comes to caring about the greater community, the leadership of UMBC is noticed and appreciated within the University System of Maryland and around the state.”

SGA Thanks Faculty and Staff for Support

The Student Government Association (SGA) showed their support and appreciation to UMBC employees by presenting the Faculty Staff Senate with an award of gratitude on Tuesday, December 8. Remarks were made by President Freeman Hrabowski and Provost Elliot Hirshman, followed be a presentation by Yasmin Karimian, SGA president, who said that students appreciate the financial sacrifices made by faculty and staff.

“I don’t think we say it enough,” Karimian said, “but thank you. Because of your efforts, students are safe to graduate. You’re helping us financially finish our education, and we truly appreciate everything you’ve done.”

Karimian, along with the rest of the SGA, voted unanimously to present this award.

Provost Hirshman also spoke about the university’s civility during tough economic times.

“Two million dollars was taken out of our budget,” said Hirshman, “and people continue to perform at the highest level of achievement. I also want to thank and acknowledge everyone for their efforts.”

Below is Karimian presenting the award to Tim Topoleski, president of the Faculty Staff Senate.

The Giving Tree

This year the MCC is more focused on showing the spirit of giving rather than the dollar amount that you give. Every dollar can make a difference.

  • A $20 donation can provide lodging, or a home-away-from-home,  at the Ronald McDonald House for families whose children are receiving medical care at local hospitals .
  • A $10 donation to an animal shelter can provide spay or neuter surgery for one dog or cat, which can prevent hundreds of unwanted puppies or kittens from being born and ending up in shelters or on the streets.
  • A $5 donation can provide five handbooks for the American Heart Association’s Heartsaver CPR in Schools program, which teaches students emergency rescue procedures.
  • A $1 donation to any charity, combined with other donations, can have endless possibilities.

Dawn Swierczewski, business service specialist for the Department of Biological Sciences, is a coordinator for the Maryland Charity Campaign. She’s constructed a giving tree in her department. For every person who donates to the MCC, a paper button goes up on the wall, and the logo of the charity selected is added to the tree.
