New Asian Studies Program

From Elliot Hirshman, Provost and John Jeffries, Dean, College of Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences

It is with great pleasure that we announce the establishment of our new major, minor and certificate programs in Asian Studies (ASIA). Constantine Vaporis, Professor of History, will serve as the program’s founding Director.

Asian Studies is an interdisciplinary program, emphasizing study in Asian languages (currently Chinese, Japanese and Korean), history, society, culture, gender and women’s studies, literature, politics, economics, philosophy, art and music. The program will enroll its first students this fall. It will equip students with the knowledge and skills—including important language skills—to help prepare them for various professional paths related to Asia, including international relations, international business and trade, government service, academic research and international law.

We thank Dr. Vaporis, Vice Provost for Academic Affairs Tony Moreira, Beth Wells, Chris Steele and the members of the Faculty Senate and its associated committees for their work on the program proposal.
