Research by Tulay Adali, professor of computer science and electrical engineering, and Vince Calhoun ’02 Ph.D, electrical engineering, was highlighted in the March issue of the IEEE Spectrum.
“Teaching Machines About Madness” examines sophisticated new techniques for making medical diagnoses and planning treatment based on electroencephalogram (EEG), magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and functional MRI brain scans. Adali, Calhoun, an electrical and computer engineering professor at the University of New Mexico and Juan Arribas from the University of Valladolid, Spain, developed a “machine-learning approach” that can help physicians diagnose schizophrenia and bipolar disorder using functional MRI scan. The work took place while Arribas was visiting Adali’s lab (mlsp.umbc.edu) in summer, 2009.
