Zeynep Tufekci, Sociology, on Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty

In the February 21 story “Exporting Nonviolent Revolution, From Eastern Europe To The Middle East,” Zeynep Tufekci, assistant professor of sociology, noted that messages of both solidarity and practical knowledge have been exchanged online among protesters in Tunisia, Egypt and elsewhere throughout the Middle East. “It’s really just a very integrated movement, even though the uprisings are very national and very organic,” Tufekci said. “They’re not just inspired by outside; they’re inspired by their own grievances, but the technical considerations are inspired by what’s going on elsewhere.” Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty is funded by the U.S. Congress to provide “uncensored news, responsible discussion, and open debate” in areas of the world “where the free flow of information is either banned by government authorities or not fully developed.”
