On Stateline, Roy Meyers, professor of political science, tackled the issue of budgets created by school officials on extremely tight deadlines. Both local and state deadlines are July 1, which means school districts must craft their budgets before they know how much money to expect from the state. Typically, this amount can be estimated based on previous years, but as education faces potentially serious cuts, school officials face difficult budgeting decisions. Meyers suggests, “The main way of solving that problem is not to change the fiscal year but for the state governments to enact their budgets on time.” Meyers is also a member of Baltimore County’s spending affordability panel, which is recommending a county spending limit of $1,633,889,458 for fiscal year 2012, according to the Towson Times.
