UMBC’s ELC is now the English Language Institute

UMBC’s English Language Center (ELC) is now known as the English Language Institute (ELI), a change in name that recognizes the growth and strength of its programs.

“The term ‘institute’ will improve global understanding of our work, a key part of our broader effort to attract international students who seek the ELI’s excellence in instruction and array of language and training options,” said Rebekah de Wit, the ELI’s director since August 2010 and a UMBC alumna.

The ELI provides both a pathway to UMBC and U.S. university study for international students, and robust stand-alone training for professionals, researchers and others from abroad who seek to improve their English language skills. Since its founding in 1994, the ELI has become a central part of campus life at UMBC and offers programs on campus, on site and online that serve several hundred international students and professionals from more than 50 countries.
