The Shriver Center was mentioned in a USA Today article honoring Sargent Shriver, who is described as “founding and leading some of America’s most prominent institutions of peace, justice and equal opportunity.” In addition to the Shriver Center—which houses the Peaceworker Program and Choice Program—other institutions continuing Shriver’s legacy include the Sargent Shriver Peace Institute and Sargent Shriver National Center on Poverty Law.
Sargent Shriver was the first director of the Peace Corps, and the center at UMBC was named after him and the late Mrs. Eunice Kennedy Shriver in 1993 in recognition of their historic commitment to service.
