In “The Democratic Party in the Age of Obama: Yes We Can or No We Can’t?” Thomas Schaller, political science, examines the shifting priorities, messaging and resonance of the Democratic Party from the Clinton years to the present. The essay appears in the latest issue of New Labor Forum, a popular journal out of the Murphy Institute for Worker Education and Labor Studies of the City University of New York.
In “How Generous is America?” Schaller suggests that as a nation “in absolute terms we give large sums to needy, developing nations…but not relative to our net wealth.” As individuals, however, Americans donate significant funds to non-profit groups, providing over 80% of the $230 billion donated to non-profits in 2008. The article appeared December 27 in the Baltimore Sun.
