Julie Castaneda ’14, mechanical engineering, was featured on a recent Maryland Public Television broadcast entitled “You Can Afford College.” The program, which originally aired on December 8, focused on grants and scholarships that are available to high school students in Maryland. “You Can Afford College” is an annual special produced by MPT.
Castaneda was featured because she received a Howard Rawlings Guaranteed Access Grant, which is a grant offered by the state of Maryland to students with financial need. She is a first-generation college student. Also featured on the program was Stephanie Johnson, UMBC’s director of financial aid and scholarships, who discussed the grant and the ways that UMBC helps Castaneda to manage her finances to meet her needs.
