In a guest post on the New York Times Freakonomics blog, Dennis Coates, professor of economics, argued that losing its bid to host the 2022 World Cup was actually a big win for the US. “Economists and public policy analysts have studied the economic impact of large international sporting events like the World Cup and the Olympics, and national events like the Super Bowl, and the evidence shows that there is very little in the way of economic benefit from hosting these events.” Coates is immediate past president of the North American Assoc of Sports Economists and is a guest blogger for the Christian Science Monitor.
The article, “Why Losing the World Cup Bid Is a Big Win,” appeared December 2.
