UMBC Public Policy Professor John Rennie Short will deliver the keynote address at “Cartography and Empire: Commemorating the Bicentennial of the Lewis and Clark Map,” hosted by Yale’s Lamar Center for the Study of Frontiers and Borders and the Western Americana Collection of the Beinecke Library (Nov 12, 5 p.m., Whitney Humanities Center).
Short is an expert on urban and environmental issues, globalization, political geography and the history of cartography. His most recent books include “Cities and Suburbs: New Metropolitan Realities in the US” (2010) and “Cartographic Encounters: Indigenous Peoples and The Exploration of the New World” (2009).
