For the second time in the first three weeks of league awards, UMBC freshman forward Pete Caringi III ’14 was named America East Conference Men’s Soccer Rookie of the Week.
Caringi bailed out a desperate UMBC side, scoring the game-tying goal in the 85th minute to draw the Retrievers even at 1-1 with La Salle in an eventual 2-1 UMBC victory on Wednesday, September 15. Three days later, he went on to score the game-winning goal in the 78th minute to cap a furious Retriever comeback, which wiped out a 2-0 Mount St. Mary’s halftime edge and propelled visiting UMBC to a 3-2 victory.
Though six games, Caringi had four goals in 207 minutes of action in his initial season and was a +4 (5 UMBC goals scored, 1 allowed) when he was on the field.
Caringi is second in America East for goals per game (0.67), only trailing teammate Levi Houapeu ’11 who averages 1.0 goal per game through six contests.
Caringi also captured the award on Sept. 7, 2010.
