UMBC freshman forward Pete Caringi III ’14 was named Men’s Soccer Rookie of the Week by the America East Conference. Also, junior midfielder Nirav Kadam ’12 was named to the Top Drawer Soccer Team of the Week.
Caringi scored a pair of goals in his collegiate debut, helping UMBC to a 5-3 victory over Virginia Military Institute on Thursday, September 2. He entered the game late in the first half and converted a crossing pass from Kingsley Onwuka ’12 in the 37th minute to give the Retrievers a 3-0 lead at intermission. VMI cut the lead to 4-2, but Caringi briefly restored a three goal lead, converting a rebound of an Andrew Bulls shot in the 82nd minute. It was the first two-goal debut since Matt Curran ’08 scored twice in a 10-0 season-opening rout of NJIT in 2004.
In his first two UMBC appearances, Kadam led the Retrievers with a pair of goals and two assists. He was credited with the game-winning goal against VMI and added the insurance marker in the 78th minute against Wofford. He also drew assists on UMBC’s first two goals of the season. The UNC Greensboro transfer was named to the UMBC/Navy Kick-Off Tournament’s All-Tournament team.
