Student Athletes Named Arthur Ashe, Jr. Sports Scholars

Seniors Alice Chen and Britney Foreman and sophomore Joe Adewumi were named 2010 Arthur Ashe, Jr. Sports Scholar by Diverse: Issues In Higher Education.

Chen was cited as a first team member and the women’s tennis winner of the eleven recipients in that sport.

A repeat selection by the magazine, UMBC’s female recipient of the Matt Skalsky Scholar-Athlete award capped the spring by earning a place on the 2009-10 CoSIDA/ESPN the Magazine Academic All-America University Division Women’s At-Large Second Team. Diverse: Issues In Higher Education established the Sports Scholar Awards to honor undergraduate students of color who have made achieving both academically and athletically a winning combination. The publication first published its “Arthur Ashe Jr. Sports Scholars” edition in 1995. It has remained one of the magazine’s most popular editions since its inception.
