Interim Police Chief Manuel Lewis to Join CCBC

From: Lynne Schaefer, Vice President of Administration and Finance

I write to inform the campus community that Manuel (Manny) Lewis, currently serving as interim chief of police, has announced he will be leaving UMBC on May 31, after 16 years of dedicated, outstanding service to the UMBC community. Manny leaves us to become assistant director of public safety at CCBC, responsible for directing the campus security department at the Essex Campus. While it is sad to see such a great individual go, it is wonderful that Manny will have this opportunity to lead a campus security department.

Manny retired from the Maryland State Police and joined UMBC in 1994 as assistant to Police Chief David Yohman. He rose to the rank of deputy chief of police in 2000 under Chief John Cook, and has served two assignments as interim chief. During his tenure at UMBC, he provided operations supervision including direct supervision of Parking Services, served as the liaison between the Police Department and the Office of Residential Life and coordinated the Police Department’s services for all campus events. During each change in leadership, he assured the continuation of such valuable student programs as Pizza with the Police and the drunk-driving awareness demonstrations.

Join us to celebrate Manny Lewis’ many contributions to campus on Wednesday, May 19, 3-4:30 p.m. ,for a dessert reception in The Commons’ Fireside Lounge (adjacent to the Skylight Room). RSVP to and send contributions for a gift and the reception to Nancy Abell (nabell@umbc.edu), ext. 5-3634, Room 925, Administration Building. Checks should be made payable to Nancy as well.

RSVP no later than Monday, May 17, at noon, if you plan to attend the reception.

(Stay tuned for an announcement early next week on the appointment of UMBC’s new Chief of Police.)
