Two Students Receive Goldwater Scholarships

Two juniors are the recipients of Barry M. Goldwater scholarships for the 2010-2011 academic year. Geoffrey Clapp ‘11, computer science and mathematics, plans to pursue a Ph.D. in applied mathematics. Nathaniel Kim ‘11, chemistry and political science, will pursue a Ph.D. in chemistry.

Goldwater scholarships are awarded based on academic merit and available to sophomores and juniors in science, mathematics, and engineering who have been nominated by their institution. No other UMBC students were nominated this year. The scholarship covers the cost of tuition, fees, books, and room and board up to a maximum of $7,500.  There were 1,111 applications for the 278 scholarships awarded nationwide.
