The Chess Team rivals some of the most prestigious centers of higher learning in the country, and in the process garners boatloads of attention from the international media and academic world. Alan Sherman, associate professor of computer science and director of the Cyber Defense Lab, said, “UMBC has always sought an identity and continues to do so, and chess embodies the ideals of the university’s valuing of intellectual activity.” Sherman has served as director of the chess program since 1991.
