Journalist Helene Cooper fled her home country of Liberia as a young woman when civil war erupted in 1980. On Wednesday, March 24, 7 p.m., in the Albin O. Kuhn Library, she will read excerpts from her memoir, “The House at Sugar Beach: In Search of a Lost African Childhood,” and discuss the experience of growing up in Liberia. She will also share her insights about the Obama administration from her lens as The New York Times White House correspondent.
This event is part of the Humanities Forum and is sponsored by the Dresher Center for the Humanities with support from the Department of English.

The book by Helen Cooper, “The House at Sugar Beach” is a delightful read. I would advise anyone, particularly those interested in their African roots, to read the book and come listen to Ms. Cooper at UMBC. I am soooo excited that she’s coming! I would like to know how I can contact her for future booktalks and signings as I am a librarian with Baltimore County.
I apologize for misspelling Ms. Cooper’s first name – I was so excited. I know her name is Helene and not Helen.
