A recent story in The New York Times story claimed that UMBC and the University of Texas-Dallas were the two dominant chess teams in the country. It credited, among other things, the schools’ recruiting efforts. Alan Sherman, director of the chess program and associate professor of computer science , disagreed. “It isn’t one of our strengths. Recruiting is the strength," he said. Sherman said he keeps in touch with prospects and encourages them "in a low-key way" to come to UMBC.
The article, “University of Texas at Dallas chess recruiter helps keep team on top,” ran Sunday, February 7, in the Dallas Morning News.
