Exempt Employee
Steve Anderson, manager of classroom technology for the Department of Instructional Technology (DoIT) and New Media, has been named the Exempt Employee of the Quarter. Anderson began his career at UMBC in March 1992 as an audio visual technician in DoIT. He was promoted over the years and moved to his current position in July 2006.
Nancy Abell, executive administrative assistant in the Office of the Vice President for Administration and Finance, nominated Anderson for this award. “Steve is the consummate customer service provider,” said Abell. “He consistently goes above and beyond the call of duty in assisting with audio visual equipment/presentations. It seems nothing is ever too much to ask.”
In addition, Anderson was highly recommended for this award by other colleagues.
Anderson received his certificate and learned that he had been selected as Employee of the Quarter during a surprise announcement at the DoIT holiday pot luck luncheon held on Friday, December 18.
Non-Exempt Employee
Cathy Councilman, administrative assistant II for the Office of Off-Campus Student Services (OCSS), has been named the Non-Exempt Employee of the Quarter. Councilman began employment at UMBC in January 2006, after working for many years as UMBC’s advertising representative at the Baltimore Sun.
Councilman was nominated by Ben Goldberg, coordinator in OCSS. “Cathy Councilman’s outstanding abilities make her invaluable to the Office of Off-Campus Student Services,” said Goldberg. “She has outstanding people and customer service skills even when she is very busy, which is most of the time. Cathy does a lot and does all of it well.”
OCSS surprised Councilman with the news of her award at a holiday party in December 2009, attended by staff of the Division of Student Affairs. In honor of this achievement, the department will also hold a lunch celebration.

Congratulations!!!!! Well done and well deserved!
