UMBC will enter two chess teams at the 2009 Pan-American Intercollegiate in Texas. This year, there will be at least four strong teams. UMBC has two grandmasters, one grandmaster-elect, one international master and one international woman grandmaster. The top four U.S. schools will be invited back to the Final Four in April.
Last year, UMBC tied for first place at the Pan-Am and won first place at the Final Four. UMBC has won the Pan-Am (or tied for first place) a record of seven times – more than any other school.
Of the four players on Team A who have established GPAs, three have 4.0s, and the other has a GPA over 3.8.
