Even though winter storms don’t have the same economic effect as a hurricane or tornado – snow does close schools and for every day that snow is closed, students do worse on standardized tests according to a 2007 study in Maryland. “The one to two percentage point drop isn’t huge, but it’s significant,” said Dave Marcotte, professor of public policy professor. “That’s on the order of changing the class size by three to four students in the class.”
