Writing Workshop with Barbara Walvoord (10/30)

UMBC is committed to providing appropriate and effective instruction in writing to our students and to supporting our writing intensive courses as fully as possible.  To those ends, the Provost has funded, and the Office of Undergraduate Education has arranged for, two workshops to be offered by Barbara Walvoord, professor emerita of English from Notre Dame University. Walvoord is an acknowledged expert in the teaching of writing in the disciplines and now focuses her work supporting faculty members as they develop writing intensive course content.

Walvoord will provide a half-day workshop designed for faculty and staff members who are teaching writing-intensive (WI) courses, are planning to teach a WI course and/or want to learn how to create more effective writing experiences for their students. These sessions will be very practical, and she will provide advice on creating course-appropriate writing-intensive assignments, grading for student success and improvement and the importance of writing as a tool for learning and assessment.

Don’t miss this wonderful opportunity to explore how writing can enhance students’ learning. To sign up, contact Barbara Smith in the Office of Undergraduate Education at bsmith@umbc.edu or ext. 5-2300 by October 23.

The workshop will be Friday, October 30, 8:30 a.m.-noon or 1-4:30 p.m. (indicate the time you’ll attend when RSVPing), in the Information Technology and Engineering Building, Room 456.

All faculty, staff and teaching assistants interested in the development of writing intensive courses and/or the creation of better writing assignments are welcome.

Save the date for Walvoord’s next visit on Thursday, January 21, 2010.
