Disability History and Awareness Month

In July, Governor Martin O’Malley signed an executive order declaring October as “Disability History and Awareness Month.” Maryland’s Higher Education Commission Secretary James E. Lyons, Sr. requests colleges and universities to provide programs about the disability rights movement and people with disabilities. UMBC faculty, staff and students are encouraged to “supplement existing lesson plans” with relevant information regarding people with disabilities and their life experience. UMBC’s Learning Resource Center will include extensive disability sensitivity-awareness training for tutors participating in EDUC 313 and EDUC 314 this month. Several programs are being planned for the UMBC community including a sign language interpreted performance of “Kiss Kiss: An Evening of Magical Realism” on October 22 at 4 p.m.

Faculty and departments that would like more information and assistance supplementing coursework during October may contact Denise G. Perdue at ext. 5-6358 or dperdue@umbc.edu.
