Ellen Handler Spitz, Visual Arts, in Los Angeles Times

In her recent column for the Los Angeles Times, M.J. Lord discusses the importance of original writing in today’s classroom and amongst scholars. She compares her novel to Robin Gerber’s “Barbie and Ruth: The Story of the World’s Most Famous Doll and the Woman Who Created Her.” In Gerber’s book, Lord found direct quotations taken from her research without attribution. She cites her friend, Ellen Handler Spitz, Honors College professor and professor of visual arts at UMBC, who said, “Scholars cite existing books so readers will know they did their homework.”

The article, “One Author Asks, Can I Get a Little Credit Here, Please?” ran August 30.
