The recent buzz over a New York college student suing her school because she can’t find a job has generated much talk in the world of career services. With the current economic crisis, the issue raises the question: “Is a school’s career center a job placement agency?” Lorie Logan-Bennett, associate director of UMBC’s Career Services Center, said her office helps students in a variety of ways. “There’s no guarantee of employment,” she said. “We want to put some responsibilities on the students to make sure they’re preparing themselves along the way and doing all they could to prepare for lifetime career management and employment.”
